46ab-try again for a large picture! and the pic magically appears on the previous slide by magic?
Thanks to the eagle eye of Andrew Lance, a new variety of gears set B has been uncovered. It is the top one in the picture. The standard Type 5 of 1959-61 is on the bottom. The new variety has blocky black lettering on the pale yellow background on the end of the set box. The date slip is gone but we CAN date this fairly closely. With the pricing of 15/3 clearly shown, it is from mid 1960 to jan 1961. I have a type 5 dated as late as Dec 1960 so this one must date Jan 1961. By Feb 1961 price list, the price has risen to 16/6. Were the last of the boxes printed in this style to tide them over til the 1962 retofit of the sets. Could this also be due to the confusion of the 1962 launch of the new sets that was to happen originally in 1961 but didn't? It may have caught them flat-footed. They probably had to order some new boxes in a hurry to get them thru 1961 and this one shown was the result...did someone lose the old printing masks? So, lets call this a variety and see if any more show up and are dated. I would love to have one if someone has one?
