1970 Steam Engine instructions
(scanned by Ellis Cory)
Notes by Owen Roberts:
These engines are fairly simple to operate. There are two types, one with a meths burner and water level plug and the later version with a water level sight glass and a tray for burning fuel tablets. Sometimes you may find another combination of the two. Some items that may not be in the instructions:
- Unscrew and check the safety valve is working and the washers are not perished.
- Use soft water in the boiler - rain water, distilled (not deionised) water, or recovered water from dehumidifier or fridge.
- You can have a longer run by preheating the boiler water in a kettle, but I would use a cold water start for the first couple of runs.
- Lubricate bearings and gears with mineral oil.
- It is better to use steam oil in the cylinder and where the cylinder oscillates against the fixed port. If you cannot obtain steam oil use mineral car oil or hypoid oil. Do NOT use 3in1 oil where steam is present. It will combine with steam to form a grinding paste.
