Hi, Michael! It may be an impossible task with this system, not only due to the variable tension on the cord, but also due to the very short action radius on the pulleys.

Back in the early 1960s I tried to build this model, with the intention of incorporating it in my extensive Hornby clockwork railway layout. But, I never succeeded in getting the gates to open or shut in unison as described, and eventually I reverted to moving the gates by hand, or what we might refer to nowadays as 'manual' mode!
