The grab was built mainly from parts taken from an early 30s No. 6 built up using accessory sets which changed colour from year to year. Originally, the hoist rope was connected to the operating rod by means of an Eyepiece with another below to help guide it through the holes in the Wheel Flanges on the way down. To obtain greater reliability, these have been replaced by the slightly modified parts shown.
