How-To:
1) Turn down the mid section for threading M12.
2) Cut it in half, face the mid ends and center drill both.
3) Drill ends out and tap for M6 all-thread.
4) Trim end so that the two big ends milling ridges align.
5) Tighten pieces together, cut centre section thread in the lathe.
6) Finish one end by die, turn die, back it down and tighten up the other end as in 4).
7) Finish the thread (this is where pic was taken).
8) Disassemble, replace die with a M12 nut, loctite the M6.
9) Tighten the thing, make sure nut moves freely & rebar aligns as in 4).
10) Put it to its intended use.

More to the point, how did you get that die over the thick bits and onto the turned-down rebar? |

Good questions, young man! To quote a fairly known statesman: "-But why, some say, machine Rebar? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain?"
George Mallory (1886-1924) had already answered that question 40 years earlier: "Because it's there."
That goes for rebar as well, apart from it being CHEAP.
Then the statesman continued: "-We choose to machine Rebar! We choose to machine Rebar in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." To your last question I calmly reply: "-With GREAT difficulty". It's not recommended to be undertaken by faint-hearted, draft-evaders or pleasure-seekers.

Why machine rebar? That's some of the worst stuff known to man! And how didja get the die and holder onto the friggin' rebar in the first place? |
