Mock up of diff casing with lockable inter-axle diff
The input shaft is to the left, driving the pair of contrates locked to the shaft. The left hand half inch pinion is loose on the rod and takes the drive below to what will be the axle's differential. The input shaft goes partially into the right hand half inch wide faced pinion. That takes the drive to the second differential. The spring loaded shaft connects the two wide faced half inch pinions together when moved to the right, thus locking the inter-axle differential.
