35-IMG_5221 Healds shaft 1 of 4.jpg
Picture 35 is of 1 of 4 heald shafts that will be needed. Note that each one carries 16 healds even though not all will necessarily be used in every weave pattern (for example the ‘Delta’ or ‘Herringbone’ that this loom will hopefully produce!), but best to have them all there to give scope for alternative patterns.
The heald shaft is comprised of two 11.5” axle rods, and two 3.5” axle rods, connected by 4 ‘standard’ 3-hole couplings.
At the bottom of one of the 11.5” axles is an end bearing which will be attached to one of the 4 cam rockers. Since taking the photo, I’ve thought better of using a grub to attach this bearing, so a bolt will replace it.
This connection needs good integrity, and if it did become loose it would be a devil of a job to get in there and fix.
As illustrated in the picture, there’s 3” from the top of the 11.5” axle to the coupling. All four shafts in the original seem to be identical, so copy.
